Is Krav Maga effective in a street fight?
The answer to this question is obvious for those who practice it regularly, and for once relatively simple, a big yes! Of course it is! But why?
The problem that Krav-Maga seeks to solve is relatively simple: “X or Y (or X and Y plus others) seeks to harm my physical integrity, what is the quickest, most effective, most economical way in terms of my own endangerment and that I can implement without being an over-trained professional?
The answers provided by Krav Maga, are as simple as the question, and bring together some basic anatomical principles of how the human body works, the most sensitive parts of it, the movements it can make to attack, defend and counter attack in an effective fighting system.
Krav Maga IKMF in the world and in Berlin
The IKMF (International Krav Maga Federation) was founded 30 years ago (read our article here). For 30 years, a group of close combat experts has been teaching, training instructors and students all over the world in more than 100 countries.
All these countries represent populations with completely different cultures, therefore different situations and confrontations with different scenarios, but all of them use the same fighting system, and all of them report hundreds of feedbacks, for years to the HQ in Israel, which the IKMF experts analyze, in order to optimize the techniques and scenarios taught all over the world, in order to improve their efficiency, to be as ready as possible for a street fight, in Berlin as well as everywhere.
In fact, all instructors around the world must participate in refresher courses, at least once a year, in order to know the latest evolutions of our curriculum of techniques, with the aim of transmitting to you, our students, the most efficient means to defend yourselves.
Beyond this general aspect of our organization’s approach to the evolution of Krav Maga, we can also mention here the specificities of our self-defense system, such as the curriculum that has been set up only for women, in order to defend themselves against possible sexual assault, which you can practice in Berlin in our Krav Maga club in Kreuzberg.
Krav Maga training; realistic street fighting training
One of the most important aspects of Krav Maga training is to place the student in the safest possible situation while adding a high enough risk factor so that the person can learn and apply what he or she has practiced in a street fight situation.
Indeed, a street fight is a situation where everything happens very quickly, with intense stress, during which the human body of the defender will only be able to function in an almost automatic mode, the decisions must be short and as efficient as possible.
This is why all the training sessions that we offer at Cityskills, as in all the other Krav Maga IKMF clubs in Berlin and others, always end with the implementation of a physical stress factor (realization of physical exercises increasing the stress by increasing the heart rate of the student and all his metabolism) or mental (like starting an exercise by closing the eyes, suppressing one of the student’s senses and placing his body in a situation of intense cognitive stress) to the practice of the technique or scenario learned during the training, allowing, in complete safety, to touch the closest to the reality of a street fight.
Finally, we can also mention the practice of exercises unique to Krav Maga, tactical exercises that place the student in a situation where he or she is attacked by several aggressors at the same time. These exercises range from learning the different possible placements, the best responses to this type of problem, to “sparring” type combat situations, to be able to defend oneself on the day.
